Yucaipa, California, in San Bernardino County, is eight miles east of Redlands, California (center to center) and 21 miles east of Riverside, California. It’s situated in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains and was incorporated in 1989. The city’s name comes from the Shoshonean language for “water” or “marshy place.”

Yucaipa is a larger midsized city with a population of 52,536 and eight constituent neighborhoods. Yucaipa is the 168th largest community in California. Housing costs in Yucaipa are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices here don’t compare to those in the most expensive communities in California.

The city is has a mixed workforce of blue-collar and white-collar jobs. Overall, Yucaipa is a city of sales and office workers, professionals and service providers. Many residents work in office and administrative support (14.40%), sales jobs (11.98%) and management occupations (10.09%).

The Yucaipa-Calimesa School District typically is positioned near the top in all categories for educational achievement.

The city sits at 2,650 feet, at the base of the foothills leading to the San Bernardino Mountains. Being situated near the mountains provides Yucaipa with a desirable climate and is one of the primary reasons for its popularity with retirees.

The Serrano Indians were the original inhabitants of the area. The marshlands provided ample vegetation and wildlife. In 1842, Antonio Maria Lugo acquired a land grant from Mexican Governor Alvarado and founded the San Bernardino Rancho. The region was utilized for raising sheep and growing grains and alfalfa.
